A perfusionist is a skilled person, qualified by academic and clinical education who operates the heart lung machine when it is necessary to replace the patients circulatory or respiratory function. The course is intended to give training in cardiopulmonary by-pass techniques. This would involve some knowledge of anatomy physiology and physics. These technicians also have training in monitoring techniques, which are essential for perfusion. The perfusionist is skilled in the administration of blood products, anesthetic agents and drugs through the extra corporeal circuit. Further the perfusionist is also knowledgeable and competent in the management of other perfusion related equipment, techniques and procedures.
After successful completion of the course the student will be able to operate the heart lung machine when it is necessary to replace a patient circulatory or respiratory function and able to manage perfusion related equipments, techniques and procedures.
